Apple Crumble Bars
Serves: Twelve | Prep: 50 min | Cook: 40 min
Ingredients:
Apple Crumble Bars:
Base:
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup butter, room temperature
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp salt
Apple Filling:
3-4 large apples, peeled and thinly sliced
1 Tbsp butter
2 Tbsp light brown sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
Crumble Topping:
1/2 cup butter, room temperature
1 cup oats
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
Directions:
Line a 13X9-inch baking pan with baking paper, allowing the paper to hang over the sides for easy removal later.
In a mixing bowl fitted with a paddle attachment, cream butter and sugar together until light and combined. Add the vanilla, salt, and sifted flour, mixing until the mixture becomes crumbly and just starts to come together as a dough. If the dough feels too dry, add water one tablespoon at a time until it reaches a soft but not sticky consistency. Press the dough evenly into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Place the pan in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to chill.
Preheat the oven to 350°F/180°C. Bake the chilled base for about 15 minutes, or until lightly golden.
While the base is baking, prepare the filling by melting butter and sugar in a skillet over medium heat. Add the apples and cinnamon and cook for 5–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are soft. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the baked base.
To make the crumble topping, mix the butter, sugar, oats, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg together in a bowl until crumbly. Sprinkle the crumble evenly over the apples and return the pan to the oven. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Allow to cool before slicing and serving.
